Genesis 48

Jacob Blesses Josephās Sons
1After these things, Joseph was told, āYour father is sick.ā So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2When Jacob was told, āYour son Joseph is coming to you,ā Israel strengthened himself and sat up in the bed.
3#Ge 17:1; Ex 6:3Jacob said to Joseph, āGod Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me. 4#Ge 17:8And He said to me, āI will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make you into a multitude of people and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.ā
5#Ge 41:50ā52; 46:20āNow your two sons, Ephraim and MaĀnasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. 6Any children you have after them will be yours and will be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7#Ge 35:9; 35:16ā19As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to get to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).ā
8Then Israel saw Josephās sons and said, āWhose are these?ā
9#Ge 27:4; 33:5And Joseph said to his father, āThey are my sons, whom God has given me in this place.ā
And he said, āPlease bring them to me, and I will bless them.ā
10#Ge 27:1; 27:27Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
11#Ge 37:33; 45:26Israel said to Joseph, āI never thought I would see your face, but here God has also shown me your children.ā
12#Ge 42:6So Joseph took them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the ground. 13Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israelās left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israelās right hand, and brought them near him. 14#Ge 41:51Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraimās head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manassehās head, crossing his hands, for Manasseh was the firstborn.
15#Ge 17:1He blessed Joseph and said,
āGod, before whom my fathers
Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who fed me
all my life long to this day,
16#Ps 34:22; 121:7 the angel who redeemed me from all evil,
bless the boys;
let them be called by my name,
and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac;
and let them grow into a multitude
in the midst of the earth.ā
17#Ge 48:14When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took hold of his fatherās hand to remove it from Ephraimās head to Manassehās head. 18Joseph said to his father, āNot so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head.ā
19#Dt 33:17His father refused and said, āI know it, my son, I know it. He will also become a people, and he will also be great, but truly his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a multitude of nations.ā 20#Ru 4:11ā12He blessed them that day, saying,
āBy you Israel will bless, saying,
āMay God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.ā ā
So he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
21#Ge 46:4; 50:24Israel said to Joseph, āI am about to die, but God will be with you and return you again to the land of your fathers. 22#Jos 24:32; Jn 4:5Moreover, I have given to you one portion more than your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorites with my sword and my bow.ā

1And after these events it came to be that it was said to YosÄph, āSee, your father is sick.ā And he took with him his two sons, Menashsheh and Ephrayim.
2And YaāaqobĢ± was told, āSee, your son YosÄph is coming to you.ā And YisraāÄl strengthened himself and sat up on the bed.
3And YaāaqobĢ± said to YosÄph, āÄl Shaddai appeared to me at Luz in the land of Kenaāan and blessed me,
4and said to me, āSee, I am making you fruitful and shall increase you and make of you an assembly of peoples, and give this land to your seed after you as an everlasting possession.ā
5āAnd now, your two sons, Ephrayim and Menashsheh, who were born to you in the land of Mitsrayim before I came to you in Mitsrayim, are mine ā as ReāubĢ±Än and Shimāon, they are mine.
6āYour offspring whom you shall bring forth after them are yours, and let them be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
7And I, when I came from Paddan, RahĢ£Äl died beside me in the land of Kenaāan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath. And I buried her there on the way to Ephrath, that is BÄyth LehĢ£em.
8And YisraāÄl saw YosÄphās sons, and said, āWho are these?ā
9And YosÄph said to his father, āThey are my sons, whom Elohim has given me in this place.ā And he said, āPlease bring them to me, and let me bless them.ā
10And the eyes of YisraāÄl were dim with age, and he was unable to see. And he drew them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
11And YisraāÄl said to YosÄph, āI had not thought to see your face. But see, Elohim has also shown me your seed!ā
12So YosÄph brought them from between his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth.
13And YosÄph took them both, Ephrayim with his right hand toward YisraāÄlās left hand, and Menashsheh with his left hand toward YisraāÄlās right hand, and brought them near him.
14And YisraāÄl stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephrayimās head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Menashshehās head, consciously directing his hands, for Menashsheh was the first-born.
15And he blessed YosÄph, and said, āThe Elohim before whom my fathers AbĢ±raham and YitshĢ£aq walked, the Elohim who has fed me all my life long to this day,
16the Messenger who has redeemed me from all evil ā bless the youths! And let my name be called upon them, and the name of my fathers AbĢ±raham and YitshĢ£aq. And let them increase to a multitude in the midst of the earth.ā
17And when YosÄph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephrayim, it was evil in his eyes; and he took hold of his fatherās hand to remove it from the head of Ephrayim to the head of Menashsheh.
18And YosÄph said to his father, āNot so, my father, for this one is the first-born, put your right hand on his head.ā
19But his father refused and said, āI know, my son, I know. He also becomes a people, and he also is great. And yet, his younger brother is greater than he, and his seed is to become the completeness of the nations.ā
20And he blessed them on that day, saying, āIn you YisraāÄl shall bless, saying, āElohim make you as Ephrayim and as Menashsheh!ā ā Thus he put Ephrayim before Menashsheh.
21And YisraāÄl said to YosÄph, āSee, I am dying, but Elohim shall be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
22And I, I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
