The Pharisees and Sadducees Seek a Sign
1Then the #Matt. 12:38; Mark 8:11; Luke 11:16; 12:54–56; 1 Cor. 1:22Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. 2He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; 3and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. 4#Prov. 30:12; Matt. 12:39; Luke 11:29; 24:46A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5Now #Mark 8:14when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6Then Jesus said to them, #Mark 8:15; Luke 12:1“Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”
8But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? 9#Matt. 14:15–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17; John 6:1–14Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? 10#Matt. 15:32–38; Mark 8:1–9Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? 11How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
13When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, #Mark 8:27; Luke 9:18“Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14So they said, #Matt. 14:2; Luke 9:7–9“Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or #Matt. 21:11one of the prophets.”
15He said to them, “But who do #John 6:67you say that I am?”
16Simon Peter answered and said, #Matt. 14:33; Mark 8:29; Luke 9:20; John 6:69; 11:27; Acts 8:37; 9:20; Heb. 1:2, 5; 1 John 4:15“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, #(Eph. 2:8)for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but #(Matt. 11:27; 1 Cor. 2:10); Gal. 1:16My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that #John 1:42you are Peter, and #Acts 2:41; (Eph. 2:20; Rev. 21:14)on this rock I will build My church, and #Job 33:17; Ps. 9:13; 107:18; Is. 38:10the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19#Matt. 18:18; John 20:23And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20#Matt. 17:9; Mark 8:30; Luke 9:21Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection
21From that time Jesus began #Matt. 20:17; Mark 8:31; 9:31; Luke 9:22; 18:31; 24:46; John 2:19to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
22Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”
23But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, #Matt. 4:10Satan! #(Rom. 8:7)You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
Take Up the Cross and Follow Him
24#Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23; (Acts 14:22; 2 Cor. 4:10, 11; 1 Thess. 3:3; 2 Tim. 3:12)Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and #(1 Pet. 2:21)follow Me. 25For #Luke 17:33; John 12:25whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26For what #Luke 12:20, 21profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or #Ps. 49:7, 8what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For #Matt. 26:64; Mark 8:38; Luke 9:26the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father #(Dan. 7:10); Zech. 14:5with His angels, #Job 34:11; Ps. 62:12; Prov. 24:12; Rom. 2:6; 2 Cor. 5:10; 1 Pet. 1:17; Rev. 2:23and then He will reward each according to his works. 28“Assuredly, I say to you, #Mark 9:1; Luke 9:27; Acts 7:55, 56; Rev. 19:11there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

The Demand for a Sign
(Mark 8:11–13; Luke 12:54–56)
1Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.
2But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’ 3and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times.#16:3 Several manuscripts do not include When evening comes... of the times. from verses 2 and 3. 4A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
(Mark 8:14–21; Luke 12:1–3)
5When they crossed to the other side, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6“Watch out!” Jesus told them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7They discussed this among themselves and concluded, “It is because we did not bring any bread.”
8Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you debating among yourselves about having no bread? 9Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11How do you not understand that I was not telling you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter’s Confession of Christ
(Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20; John 6:67–71)
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah!#16:17 Greek Simon Bar-Jonah For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.
Christ’s Passion Foretold
(Mark 8:31–33; Luke 9:21–22)
21From that time on Jesus #16:21 NE and WH Jesus Christ began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. “Far be it from You, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to You!”
23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
Take Up Your Cross
(Mark 8:34–38; Luke 9:23–27)
24Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.
28Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
