Isaiah 8

Assyria Will Invade the Land
1Moreover the Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll, and #Is. 30:8; Hab. 2:2write on it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 2And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, #2 Kin. 16:10Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”
3Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; 4#2 Kin. 17:6; Is. 7:16for before the child shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ #2 Kin. 15:29the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”
5The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:
6“Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of #John 9:7Shiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice #Is. 7:1, 2in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
7Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
8He will pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
#Is. 30:28He will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will fill the breadth of Your land, O #Is. 7:14; Matt. 1:23Immanuel.
9“Be#Joel 3:9 shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10#Is. 7:7; Acts 5:38Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, #Is. 7:14but it will not stand,
#Rom. 8:31For God is with us.”
Fear God, Heed His Word
11For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
12“Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
13The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14#Is. 4:6; 25:4; Ezek. 11:16He will be as a sanctuary,
But #Luke 2:34; 20:17; Rom. 9:33; 1 Pet. 2:8a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15And many among them shall #Matt. 21:44stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and taken.”
16Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
17And I will wait on the Lord,
Who #Deut. 31:17; Is. 54:8hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I #Hab. 2:3will hope in Him.
18#Heb. 2:13Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!
We #Ps. 71:7are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.
19And when they say to you, #1 Sam. 28:8“Seek those who are mediums and wizards, #Is. 29:4who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they #Ps. 106:28seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20#Is. 1:10; 8:16; Luke 16:29To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because #Is. 8:22; Mic. 3:6there is no light in them.
21They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and #Rev. 16:11curse their king and their God, and look upward. 22Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

Isaiah 8

Signs of the Assyrian Invasion
1Then Yahweh said to me, “Take yourself a large tablet and write on it with a common stylus pen: Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz. 2And I will require reliable witnesses as a witness for me: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah.” 3And I approached the prophetess, and she conceived, and she gave birth to a son. And Yahweh said to me, “Call his name Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz. 4For before the boy knows to call ‘my father’ and ‘my mother,’ one will carry away the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria in the presence of the king of Assyria.”
Shiloah Waters and Euphrates Flood
5And Yahweh continued to speak to me again, saying,
6“Because this people has refused the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, 7therefore look! The Lord is bringing up the waters of the great and mighty river against them, the king of Assyria and all his glory.
And he will rise above all his channels,
and he will flow over all his banks.
8And he will sweep into Judah;
he will overflow and he will flood up to the neck.
He will reach, and he will spread his wings out over your entire land,#Literally “the outspreading of his wings will be the fullness of the breadth of your land” God with us.”
9Be broken, you peoples, and be dismayed.
And listen, all distant parts of the earth;
gird yourselves and be dismayed;
gird yourselves and be dismayed!
10Make a plan,#Literally “Plan counsel” but it will be frustrated!
Speak a word, but it will not stand,
for God is with us!
Wait for Yahweh
11For Yahweh said this to me while his hand weighed heavily on me,#Literally “with the strength of the hand”
and he warned me not to walk#Literally “instructed me from walking” in the way of this people, saying,
12“You must not call conspiracy everything that this people calls conspiracy,
and you must not share its fear,#Literally “fear its fear” and you must not be in dread.
13You shall regard Yahweh of hosts as holy,
and he is your#The Hebrew is plural fear, and he is your dread.
14And he will become like a sanctuary and a stumbling-stone,
and like a stumbling-rock for the two houses of Israel,
like a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15And many shall stumble among them,
and they shall fall and they shall be broken,
and they shall be ensnared and they shall be caught.”
16Bind up the testimony;
seal the teaching among my disciples.
17And I will wait for Yahweh,
who hides his face from the house of Jacob,
and I will await him.
18Look! I and the children whom Yahweh has given to me are like signs and portents in Israel from Yahweh of hosts, the one who dwells on the mountain of Zion. 19Now if they tell you, “Consult the ghosts and the spirits, those who chirp and those who mutter. Should not a people consult its gods, the dead on behalf of the living, 20for teaching and for testimony?” surely they who speak like this have no dawn.#Literally “if not, they say like this word that there is no dawn for him,” which could also mean “if not, let them say a word like this: that there is no dawn for him”
21And it#That is, the nation will pass through it#That is, the land distressed and hungry, and this shall happen: when it is hungry, it will be enraged, and it will curse its king and its gods,#Or “God” and it will face upwar 22or look to the earth. But look! Distress and darkness, the gloom of affliction! And it will be thrust into darkness!
