Isaiah 8

Assyria Will Invade the Land
1Moreover the Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll, and #Is. 30:8; Hab. 2:2write on it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 2And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, #2 Kin. 16:10Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”
3Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; 4#2 Kin. 17:6; Is. 7:16for before the child shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ #2 Kin. 15:29the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”
5The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:
6“Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of #John 9:7Shiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice #Is. 7:1, 2in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
7Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
8He will pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
#Is. 30:28He will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will fill the breadth of Your land, O #Is. 7:14; Matt. 1:23Immanuel.
9“Be#Joel 3:9 shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10#Is. 7:7; Acts 5:38Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, #Is. 7:14but it will not stand,
#Rom. 8:31For God is with us.”
Fear God, Heed His Word
11For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
12“Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
13The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14#Is. 4:6; 25:4; Ezek. 11:16He will be as a sanctuary,
But #Luke 2:34; 20:17; Rom. 9:33; 1 Pet. 2:8a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15And many among them shall #Matt. 21:44stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and taken.”
16Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
17And I will wait on the Lord,
Who #Deut. 31:17; Is. 54:8hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I #Hab. 2:3will hope in Him.
18#Heb. 2:13Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!
We #Ps. 71:7are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.
19And when they say to you, #1 Sam. 28:8“Seek those who are mediums and wizards, #Is. 29:4who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they #Ps. 106:28seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20#Is. 1:10; 8:16; Luke 16:29To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because #Is. 8:22; Mic. 3:6there is no light in them.
21They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and #Rev. 16:11curse their king and their God, and look upward. 22Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

Isaiah's Son as a Sign to the People
1The LORD said to me, “Take a large piece of writing material and write on it in large letters:#8.1 large letters; or letters that everyone can read. ‘Quick Loot, Fast Plunder’. 2Get two reliable men, the priest Uriah and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah, to serve as witnesses.”
3Some time later my wife became pregnant. When our son was born, the LORD said to me, “Name him ‘Quick-Loot-Fast-Plunder’. 4Before the boy is old enough to say ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’, all the wealth of Damascus and all the loot of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
The Emperor of Assyria is Coming
5The LORD spoke to me again. 6He said, “Because these people have rejected the quiet waters from the brook of Shiloah,#8.6 brook of Shiloah: A stream which flowed from the large spring on the eastern side of Jerusalem. and tremble#8.6 Probable text tremble; Hebrew rejoice. before King Rezin and King Pekah, 7I, the Lord, will bring the emperor of Assyria and all his forces to attack Judah. They will advance like the flood waters of the River Euphrates, overflowing all its banks. 8They will sweep through Judah in a flood, rising shoulder high and covering everything.”
God is with us! His outspread wings protect the land.#8.8 everything.” God… land; or everything. They will spread out over the land. God be with us!”
9Gather together in fear, you nations! Listen, you distant parts of the earth. Get ready to fight, but be afraid! Yes, get ready, but be afraid! 10Make your plans! But they will never succeed. Talk as much as you like! But it is all useless, because God is with us.
The LORD Warns the Prophet
11With his great power the LORD warned me not to follow the path which the people were following. He said, 12#1 Pet 3.14–15“Do not join in the schemes of the people and do not be afraid of the things that they fear. 13Remember that I, the LORD Almighty, am holy; I am the one you must fear. 14#1 Pet 2.8Because of my awesome holiness I am like a stone that people stumble over; I am like a trap that will catch the people of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel and the people of Jerusalem. 15Many will stumble; they will fall and be crushed. They will be caught in a trap.”
Warning against Consulting the Dead
16You, my disciples are to guard and preserve the messages that God has given me. 17#Heb 2.13The LORD has hidden himself from his people, but I trust him and place my hope in him.
18 #
Heb 2.13
Here I am with the children the LORD has given me. The LORD Almighty, whose throne is on Mount Zion, has sent us as living messages to the people of Israel.
19But people will tell you to ask for messages from fortune tellers and mediums, who chirp and mutter. They will say, “After all, people should ask for messages from the spirits and consult the dead on behalf of the living.”
20You are to answer them, “Listen to what the LORD is teaching you! Don't listen to mediums — what they tell you cannot keep trouble away.”#8.20 Verse 20 in Hebrew is unclear.
A Time of Trouble
21The people will wander through the land, discouraged and hungry. In their hunger and their anger they will curse their king and their God. They may look up to the sky 22or stare at the ground, but they will see nothing but trouble and darkness, terrifying darkness into which they are being driven.
