Isaiah 52

God Redeems Jerusalem
1Awake, awake!
Put on your strength, O Zion;
Put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city!
For the uncircumcised #Neh. 11:1; Is. 48:2; 64:10; Zech. 14:20, 21; Matt. 4:5; (Rev. 21:2–27)and the unclean
Shall no longer come to you.
2#Is. 3:26Shake yourself from the dust, arise;
Sit down, O Jerusalem!
#Is. 9:4; 10:27; 14:25; Zech. 2:7Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion!
3For thus says the Lord:
#Ps. 44:12; Jer. 15:13“You have sold yourselves for nothing,
And you shall be redeemed #Is. 45:13without money.”
4For thus says the Lord God:
“My people went down at first
Into #Gen. 46:6Egypt to dwell there;
Then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
5Now therefore, what have I here,” says the Lord,
“That My people are taken away for nothing?
Those who rule over them
Make them wail,” says the Lord,
“And My name is #Ezek. 36:20, 23; Rom. 2:24blasphemed continually every day.
6Therefore My people shall know My name;
Therefore they shall know in that day
That I am He who speaks:
‘Behold, it is I.’ ”
7#Is. 40:9; 61:1; Nah. 1:15; Rom. 10:15; Eph. 6:15How beautiful upon the mountains
Are the feet of him who brings good news,
Who proclaims peace,
Who brings glad tidings of good things,
Who proclaims salvation,
Who says to Zion,
#Ps. 93:1; Is. 24:23“Your God reigns!”
8Your watchmen shall lift up their voices,
With their voices they shall sing together;
For they shall see eye to eye
When the Lord brings back Zion.
9Break forth into joy, sing together,
You waste places of Jerusalem!
For the Lord has comforted His people,
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10#Ps. 98:1–3The Lord has made bare His holy arm
In the eyes of #Luke 3:6all the nations;
And all the ends of the earth shall see
The salvation of our God.
11#Is. 48:20; Jer. 50:8; Zech. 2:6, 7; 2 Cor. 6:17Depart! Depart! Go out from there,
Touch no unclean thing;
Go out from the midst of her,
#Lev. 22:2; (Is. 1:16)Be clean,
You who bear the vessels of the Lord.
12For #Ex. 12:11, 33; Deut. 16:3you shall not go out with haste,
Nor go by flight;
#Mic. 2:13For the Lord will go before you,
#Ex. 14:19, 20; Is. 58:8And the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
The Sin-Bearing Servant
13Behold, #Is. 42:1My Servant shall deal prudently;
#Is. 57:15; Phil. 2:9He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
14Just as many were astonished at you,
So His #Ps. 22:6, 7; Matt. 26:67; 27:30; John 19:3visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;
15#Num. 19:18–21; Ezek. 36:25So shall He sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
For #Rom. 15:21; (Eph. 3:5, 9); 1 Pet. 1:2what had not been told them they shall see,
And what they had not heard they shall consider.

Isaiah 52
52
Cheer for Downtrodden Zion
1Awake, awake,
Put on your strength, O Zion;
Put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city;
For the uncircumcised and the unclean
Will no longer come into you.
2Shake yourself from the dust, arise,
O captive Jerusalem;
Rid yourself of the chains around your neck,
O captive Daughter of Zion.
3For the Lord says this, “You were sold for nothing and you will be redeemed, but not with money.” 4For the Lord God says this, “My people went down at the first into Egypt to live there; and [many years later Sennacherib] the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. 5But now, what do I have here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that My people have been taken away without reason? Those who rule over them howl [with taunting and mockery of salvation],” declares the Lord, “and My name is continually blasphemed all day long. 6Therefore My people shall know My Name and what it means. Therefore in that day I am the One who is speaking, ‘Here I am.’ ”
7How beautiful and delightful on the mountains
Are the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace,
Who brings good news of good [things],
Who announces salvation,
Who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
8Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices,
Together they shout for joy;
For they will see face to face
The return of the Lord to Zion.
9Break forth, shout joyfully together,
You ruins of Jerusalem;
For the Lord has comforted His people,
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10The Lord has bared His holy arm (His infinite power)
Before the eyes of all the nations [revealing Himself as the One by Whom Israel is redeemed from captivity],
That all the ends of the earth may see
The salvation of our God.
11Depart, depart, go out from there (the lands of exile),
Touch no unclean thing;
Go out of the midst of her (Babylon), purify yourselves,
You who carry the articles of the Lord [on your journey from there].
12For you will not go out in a hurry [as when you left Egypt],
Nor will you go in flight [fleeing, as you did from the Egyptians];
For the Lord will go before you,
And the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
The Exalted Servant
13Indeed, My Servant (the Messiah) will act wisely and prosper;
He will be raised and lifted up and greatly exalted.
14Just as many were astonished and appalled at you, My people,
So His appearance was marred more than any man
And His form [marred] more than the sons of men.
15So He will sprinkle many nations [with His blood, providing salvation],
Kings will shut their mouths because of Him;
For what they had not been told they will see,
And what they had not heard they will understand.
