Matthew 16
1¶ The Pharisees and the Sadducees came to tempt him; they asked him to show them a sign from the heaven.
2But he answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather, for the heaven is glowing with an aurora.
3And in the morning, It will be foul weather today, for the heaven has an aurora and is cloudy. O ye hypocrites, ye know how to make decisions based on the face of the heaven, and regarding the signs of the times are ye unable?
4A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and no sign shall be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he left them and departed.
5¶ And when his disciples were coming from the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
6Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and keep yourselves from the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves that ye have brought no bread?
9Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
11How is it that ye do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread that ye should keep yourselves from the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12Then they understood that he bade them not to keep themselves from the leaven of bread, but from the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
13¶ When Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I the Son of man am?
14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
15He said unto them, But who say ye that I am?
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in the heavens.
18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, a small rock and upon the large rock I will build my congregation, {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her.
19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of the heavens, and whatever thou shalt bind on the earth shall be bound in the heavens, and whatever thou shalt loose on the earth shall be loosed in the heaven.
20Then he charged his disciples that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
21¶ From that time forth Jesus began to declare unto his disciples, how it was expedient for him to go unto Jerusalem and to suffer many things of the elders and the princes of the priests and of the scribes and to be killed and to be raised again the third day.
22Then Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him, saying, Lord, be it far from thee; in no wise shall this happen unto thee.
23But he turned and said unto Peter, Remove thyself from before me, Satan; thou art an offence unto me, for thou dost not understand that which is of God, but that which is of men.
24¶ Then Jesus said unto his disciples, If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross {Gr. Stauros – stake} and follow me.
25For whosoever desires to save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he shall reward everyone according to their works.
28Verily I say unto you, There are some standing here who shall not taste of death until they have seen the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

The Signs of the Times
1 And when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“came”) which is understood as temporal the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test him,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2So he answered and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb said to them, “When#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“comes”) evening comes you say, ‘It will be fair weather because the sky is red,’ 3and early in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy weather, because the sky is red and#*Here “and” is supplied in the translation because of English style darkening.’ You know how to evaluate correctly the appearance of the sky, but you are not able to evaluate#*Here “to evaluate” is an implied repetition of the verb earlier in the verse the signs of the times. 4An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, and a sign will not be given to it except the sign of Jonah!” And he left them and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“left”) has been translated as a finite verb went away.
Beware the Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5And when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“arrived”) which is understood as temporal the disciples arrived at the other side,#That is, the other side of the Sea of Galilee they had forgotten to take bread. 6And Jesus said to them, “Watch out for and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees!” 7So they were discussing this#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation among themselves, saying, “It is because we did not take bread.” 8But knowing this,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation Jesus said, “Why are you discussing among yourselves that you did not take bread,#Some manuscripts have “you do not have bread” you of little faith? 9Do you not yet understand or do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many baskets you took up? 11How do you not understand that I did not speak to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees!” 12Then they understood that he did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter’s Confession at Caesarea Philippi
13Now when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“came”) which is understood as temporal Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi,#Literally “of Philip” he began asking#*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (“began asking”) his disciples, saying, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, Some#Literally “those on the one hand” say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16And Simon Peter answered and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!” 17And Jesus answered and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it! 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound#Or “will have been bound” in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will be released#Or “will have been released” in heaven.” 20Then he commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he was the Christ.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection
21From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day. 22And Peter took him aside and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“took … aside”) has been translated as a finite verb began to rebuke him, saying, God forbid,#Literally “merciful to you” Lord! This will never happen to you!” 23But he turned around and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“turned around”) has been translated as a finite verb said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a cause for stumbling to me, because you are not intent on the things of God, but the things of people!”
Taking Up One’s Cross to Follow Jesus
24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life on account of me will find it. 26For what will a person be benefited if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and at that time he will reward each one according to what he has done.#Literally “his activity” 28Truly I say to you, that there are some of those standing here who will never experience death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
