Matthew 10

Matthew 10
1¶ Then calling his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of weakness.
2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: the first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee and John his brother;
3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
4Simon the Canaanite and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
5¶ These twelve Jesus sent forth and commanded them, saying, Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into any city of the Samaritans,
6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has come.
8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons; freely ye have received, freely give.
9Provide neither gold nor silver nor money in your girdles,
10nor bag for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes nor a staff, for the workman is worthy of his food.
11And into whatever city or town ye shall enter, search out with diligence who in it is worthy; and there abide until ye go from there.
12And entering into the house, salute it.
13And if the house is worthy, your peace shall come upon it; but if it is not worthy, your peace shall return to you.
14And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear your words, depart out of that house or city and shake off the dust of your feet.
15Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of those of Sodom and those of Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.
16¶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore prudent as serpents and innocent as doves.
17But keep yourselves from men, for they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18and ye shall even be brought before princes and kings for my sake, for testimony unto them and to the Gentiles.
19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak, for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21And brother shall deliver up brother unto death, and the father the child, and children shall rise up against their parents and cause them to be put to death.
22And ye shall be hated of all men for my name, but he that endures to the end shall be saved.
23But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another, for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel until the Son of man be come.
24The disciple is not above his master, nor the slave above his lord.
25It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the slave as his lord. If they have called the husband of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call those of his household?
26Fear them not therefore, for there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, nor hid that shall not be known.
27What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light, and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye from the housetops.
28And fear not those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31Fear ye not, therefore; ye are of more value than many sparrows.
32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in the heavens.
33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in the heavens.
34Think not that I have come to introduce peace into the land; I came not to introduce peace, but a sword.
35For I have come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36And a man’s foes shall be those of his own household.
37He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38And he that does not take his cross {Gr. Stauros – stake} and follow after me is not worthy of me.
39He that finds his life shall lose it, and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it.
40He that receives you receives me, and he that receives me receives him that sent me.
41He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
42And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Matthew 10
10
(We have not yet translated 10:1-23. You can read those stories and most of those messages in Mark 3:13-19; 6:7-13; 13:9-13.)
Don’t be frightened of people that will hurt you because you follow Jesus
24-25Jesus told his followers, “You know about students and teachers. The teacher is more important than any of the students. The students have to learn to be like their teacher. And I am your teacher, so you have to learn to be like me.#Matthew 9:34; 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 6:40; 11:15; John 13:16; 15:20
And you know about workers and their boss. The boss is more important than any of the workers. The workers have to learn to be like their boss. And I am your boss, so you have to learn to be like me.
People will treat you the same way as they treat me. I am your leader, and they lie about me. They call me the boss over the bad spirits. And you are my followers, so they will say bad things about you too, more than they say about me. 26But don’t be frightened of them. You see, people might do things secretly now, but later God will let everyone know what they do. People hide things now, but later God will show them to everybody.#Mark 4:22; Luke 8:17
27And think about the message I tell you now. Sometimes I tell you something when nobody else is here. I might even just say it quietly in your ear. But later on, I want you to tell my message to everyone in the world. If you can, get up on a high place, and shout my words out loud, for lots of people to hear.
28Don’t be frightened of those people that can only kill your body. They can’t kill your soul. But you have to listen to God. If you don’t do what he says, you have to be frightened. He can finish up your body, and then he can also finish up your soul too, in that bad place called hell.
29Think about those little birds called sparrows. They don’t cost very much. You can buy them for a few dollars. But God remembers each one of them anyway. And if one of them falls down to the ground, God knows about it. 30-31Well, you are more important to God than a big mob of those birds, so don’t be frightened. He knows you properly. He even knows how many hairs you have on your head. So he will only let things happen to you that will be good for you.”
Follow Jesus properly
32Jesus said, “If you tell everyone that you are one of my followers, I will tell God, my father in heaven, that you are one of my followers. 33But if you tell everyone that you are not one of my followers, I will tell God, my father in heaven, that I don’t know you, and I will tell him that you are not one of my followers.#2 Timothy 2:12
34Don’t think that I came into the world to get everyone to agree with each other. No. People will not agree about me, and some people will fight the people that they don’t agree with. It will be like this,
35-36Maybe your own family will not want me, and they will turn against you and be your enemies.
A man will be the enemy of his father.
A daughter will be the enemy of her mother.
A woman will be the enemy of her mother-in-law.#Micah 7:6
37You see, you have to love me more than you love your own father and mother. Then it is all right for you to be my follower. And you have to love me more than you love your own son or daughter. Then it is all right for you to be my follower. If you don’t love me like that, you are not the right person to be my follower. 38If you want to follow me properly, you have to stop thinking only about yourself. You have to live like me. You have to be ready to die, yes, to die like a criminal on a cross, just like me.#Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23 39If you only want to look after your own life here on earth, you will lose it. You will not live with me for ever. But if you are ready to give up your life here, then you will find real life, and you will live with me for ever.”#Matthew 16:25; Mark 8:35; Luke 9:24; 17:33; John 12:25
(We have not yet translated 10:40-42. You can read some of those messages in Mark 8:34-35; 9:37, 41.)
