Isaiah 60

Isaiah 60
1¶ Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
2For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
3And the Gentiles shall walk to thy light, and the kings to the brightness of thy birth.
4Lift up thine eyes round about and see: they all gather themselves together; they come to thee; thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.
5Then thou shall see, and thou shall shine, and thine heart shall marvel, and be enlarged because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the strength of the Gentiles shall have come unto thee.
6The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the Lord.
7All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, rams of Nebaioth shall be served unto thee: they shall be offered up with grace upon my altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory.
8Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
9¶ For the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish from the first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the Lord thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified thee.
10And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall serve thee; for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my good favour I shall have mercy on thee.
11Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that the strength of the Gentiles may be brought unto thee, and their kings guided.
12For the people or the kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish and shall be utterly wasted.
13The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will honour the place of my feet.
14The sons also of those that afflicted thee shall come humbled unto thee; and at the steps of thy feet all those that despised thee shall bow themselves down; and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
15¶ Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will place thee in eternal glory, in joy from generation to generation.
16Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of the kings: and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
17For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for the stones iron; I will also put peace in the place of thy government, and righteousness in the place of thine oppressors.
18Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Saving Health and thy gates Praise.
19The sun shall no longer be thy light by day; nor shall the moon give light unto thee for brightness; but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light and thy God thy glory.
20Thy sun shall set no more; neither shall thy moon wane: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
21And thy people shall all be righteous; they shall inherit the land for ever; they shall be shoots of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
22The small one shall be as a thousand; the youngest as a strong nation; I the Lord will hasten it in its time.

Zion Glorified
1“Arise, shine! For your light has come,
and the glory of Yahweh has risen on you.
2For look! darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples,
but#Or “and” Yahweh will rise on you,
and his glory will appear over you.
3And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the bright light of your sunrise.
4Lift up your eyes all around and see!
All of them gather; they come to you.
Your sons shall come from afar,
and your daughters shall be looked after on the hip.
5Then you shall see
and you shall be radiant;
and your heart shall tremble
and open itself wide,
because the abundance of the sea shall fall upon you;
the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
6A multitude of camels shall cover you,
the young male camels of Midian and Ephah.
All those from Sheba shall come;
they shall bring gold and frankincense,
and they shall proclaim the praise of Yahweh.
7All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you;
the rams of Nebaioth shall serve you.
They shall present a sacrifice for favor on my altar,
and I will glorify my honorable house.#Literally “house of my honor”
8Who are these? They fly like a cloud,
and like doves to their coops.
9Because the coastlands wait for me,
and the ships of Tarshish are first
to bring your children from afar,
their silver and gold with them,
for the name of Yahweh your God,
and for the holy one of Israel, because he has glorified you.
10And foreigners#Literally “sons of a foreign country” shall build your walls,
and their kings shall serve you,
for in my anger I struck you,
but#Or “and” in my favor I have taken pity on you.
11And your gates shall continually be open,
day and night they shall not be shut,
to bring you the wealth of nations,
and their kings shall be led.
12For the nation and the kingdom that will not serve you shall perish,
and the nations shall be utterly devastated.
13The glory of Lebanon shall come to you;
the cypress, the plane, and the pine together,
to glorify the place of my sanctuary,
and I will do honor to the place of my feet.
14And the children of those who oppressed you shall come to you bending low,
and all those who treated you disrespectfully shall bow down at the soles of your feet.
And they shall call you the city of Yahweh,
Zion of the holy one of Israel.
15Instead of you being forsaken
and hated with no one passing through,#Or “and there is not one who passes through”
I will make#Literally “place” you an everlasting object of pride,#Literally “pride”
a joy of coming generations.#Literally “generation and generation”
16And you shall suck the milk of nations,
and suck the breast of kings,
and you shall know that I am Yahweh your Savior,
and your Redeemer, the Strong One of Jacob.
17Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
and instead of iron I will bring silver,
and instead of wood, bronze,
and instead of stones, iron.
And I will appoint#Literally “put” peace as your overseer,
and righteousness as your ruling body.#Literally “they who force you to work”
18Violence shall no longer be heard in your land;
devastation or#Or “and” destruction on your borders.
And you shall call your walls Salvation,
and your gates, Praise.
19The sun shall no longer be your light by day,
and for bright light the moon shall not give you light,
but#Or “and” Yahweh will be your everlasting light,
and your God your glory.
20Your sun shall no longer go down,
and your moon shall not wane,#Literally “be taken away”
for Yahweh himself will be your everlasting light,
and your days of mourning shall come to an end.
21And all your people shall be righteous;
they shall take possession of the land forever,
the shoot of his#The reading tradition (Qere) has “my” planting,
the work of my hands, to show my glory.
22The small one shall become a tribe,
and the smallest one a mighty nation.
I am Yahweh; I will hasten it in its time.”
