Exodus 40
1¶ And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
2In the day of the first month, the first of the month shalt thou set up the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the testimony.
3And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony and cover the ark with the veil.
4And thou shalt bring in the table and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it, and thou shalt bring in the lampstand and light its lamps.
5And thou shalt set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony and put the hanging of the door to the tabernacle.
6Then thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle, of the tabernacle of the testimony.
7And thou shalt set the laver between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar and shalt put water therein.
8Last, thou shalt set up the court round about and hang up the hanging at the court gate.
9And thou shalt take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it and shalt sanctify it with all its vessels, and it shall be holy.
10And thou shalt also anoint the altar of the burnt offering and all its vessels and sanctify the altar, and it shall be an altar most holy.
11In the same manner thou shalt anoint the laver and its base and sanctify it.
12And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the testimony and wash them with water.
13And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments and anoint him and sanctify him, that he may be my priest.
14And thou shalt bring his sons and clothe them with coats.
15And thou shalt anoint them as thou didst anoint their father, and they shall be my priests; and it shall be that their anointing shall be unto them for a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.
16¶ Thus did Moses; according to all that the Lord commanded him, so did he.
17And it came to pass in the first month in the second year on the first day of the month that the tabernacle was raised up.
18And Moses caused the tabernacle to be raised up and fastened its sockets and set up its boards and put in its bars and caused its pillars to be raised up.
19And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent above upon it, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
20And he took and put the testimony into the ark and set the staves on the ark and put the seat of reconciliation upon the ark above,
21and he brought the ark into the tabernacle and set up the veil of the curtain and covered the ark of the testimony, as the Lord commanded Moses.
22And he put the table in the tabernacle of the testimony, upon the side of the Aquilon of the tabernacle, outside the veil.
23And he set the bread in order upon it before the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
24And he put the lampstand in the tabernacle of the testimony, over against the table, on the side of the Negev of the tabernacle.
25And he lighted the lamps before the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
26He also put the golden altar in the tabernacle of the testimony before the veil.
27And he burnt aromatic incense on it, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
28In the same manner he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle.
29And he put the altar of burnt offering by the door of the tabernacle, of the tabernacle of the testimony, and offered upon it the burnt offering and the present, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
30And he set the laver between the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar and put water in it, to wash with.
31And Moses and Aaron and his sons would wash their hands and their feet in it.
32When they would enter into the tabernacle of the testimony and when they would come near unto the altar, they washed themselves, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33Last he raised up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar and set up the hanging of the court gate. Thus Moses finished the work.
34¶ Then a cloud covered the tabernacle of the testimony, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
35And Moses was not able to enter into the tabernacle of the testimony because the cloud was upon it, and the glory of the Lord had it full.
36And when the cloud lifted itself up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel went onward in all their journeys;
37but if the cloud did not lift itself up, then they did not journey until the day that it lifted itself up.
38For the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and the fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

The sacred tent is set up
1The LORD said to Moses:
2Set up my tent on the first day of the year#40.2 first day of the year: See the note at 12.2. 3and put the chest with the Ten Commandments behind the inside curtain#40.3 inside curtain: Separating the holy place from the most holy place. of the tent. 4Bring in the table and set on it those things that are made for it. Also bring in the lampstand and attach the lamps to it. 5Then place the gold altar of incense in front of the sacred chest and hang a curtain at the entrance to the tent. 6Set the altar for burning sacrifices in front of the entrance to my tent. 7Put the large bronze bowl between the tent and the altar and fill the bowl with water. 8Surround the tent and the altar with the wall of curtains and hang the curtain that was made for the entrance.
9Use the sacred olive oil to dedicate the tent and everything in it to me. 10Do the same thing with the altar for offering sacrifices and its equipment 11and with the bowl and its stand. 12Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent and make them wash themselves. 13Dress Aaron in the priestly clothes, then use the sacred olive oil to ordain him and dedicate him to me as my priest. 14Put the priestly robes on Aaron's sons 15and ordain them in the same way, so they and their descendants will always be my priests.
16Moses followed the LORD's instructions. 17And on the first day of the first month#40.17 first month: See the note at 12.2. of the second year, the sacred tent was set up. 18The posts, stands, and framework were put in place, 19then the two layers of coverings were hung over them. 20The stones with the Ten Commandments written on them were stored in the sacred chest, the place of mercy#40.20 place of mercy: See the note at 26.34. was put on top of it, and the carrying poles were attached. 21The chest was brought into the tent and set behind the curtain in the most holy place. These things were done exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses.
22The table for the sacred bread was put along the north wall of the holy place, 23after which the bread was set on the table. 24The lampstand was put along the south wall, 25then the lamps were attached to it there in the presence of the LORD. 26The gold incense altar was set up in front of the curtain, 27and sweet-smelling incense was burnt on it. These things were done exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses.
28The curtain was hung at the entrance to the sacred tent. 29Then the altar for offering sacrifices was put in front of the tent, and animal sacrifices and gifts of grain were offered there. 30The large bronze bowl was placed between the altar and the entrance to the tent. It was filled with water, 31then Moses and Aaron, together with Aaron's sons, washed their hands and feet. 32In fact, they washed each time before entering the tent or offering sacrifices at the altar. These things were done exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses.
33Finally, Moses had the curtain hung around the courtyard.
The glory of the LORD
34Suddenly the sacred tent was covered by a thick cloud and filled with the glory of the LORD.#1 K 8.10,11; Is 6.4; Ez 43.4,5; Rev 15.8. 35And so, Moses could not enter the tent. 36Whenever the cloud moved from the tent, the people would break camp and follow; 37then they would set up camp and stay there, until it moved again. 38No matter where the people travelled, the LORD was with them. Each day his cloud was over the tent, and each night a fire could be seen in the cloud.
