Spiritual Gifts
1 With regard to spiritual gifts,#tn Grk “spiritual things.” brothers and sisters,#tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:10. I do not want you to be uninformed.#tn Grk “ignorant.” 2 You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led. 3 So I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all. 8 For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things.
Different Members in One Body
12 For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body – though many – are one body, so too is Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves#tn See the note on the word “slave” in 7:21. or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not a single member, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body,” it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. 16 And if the ear says, “Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body,” it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. 17 If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell? 18 But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided. 19 If they were all the same member, where would the body be? 20 So now there are many members, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” nor in turn can the head say to the foot, “I do not need you.” 22 On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential, 23 and those members we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity,#tn Grk “have greater propriety (or decorum, presentability).” 24 but our presentable members do not need this. Instead, God has blended together the body, giving greater honor to the lesser member, 25 so that there may be no division in the body, but the members may have mutual concern for one another. 26 If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a#tc ‡ Before μέλος (melos, “member”) the great majority of witnesses read ἕν (Jen, “one”; א2 C D F G Ψ 0285 33 1881 Ï latt sy), while the most important of the Alexandrian mss omit it (Ì46 א* A B 1739). The addition of ἕν appears to be motivated by its presence earlier in the verse with μέλος and the parallel structure of the two conditional clauses in this verse, while little reason can be given for its absence (although accidental oversight is of course possible, it is not likely that all these witnesses should have overlooked it). NA27 has the word in brackets, indicating doubt as to its authenticity. member is honored, all rejoice with it.
27 Now you are Christ’s body, and each of you is a member of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues. 29 Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? 30 Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?#sn The questions in vv. 29-30 all expect a negative response. 31 But you should be eager for the greater gifts.
And now I will show you a way that is beyond comparison.#tn Grk “a still more excellent way.” In this context the phrase has an elative rather than a comparative sense, however.

The Question About Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1Brothers and sisters, I want you to know how the Holy Spirit works. 2You know that before you were believers, you were somehow drawn away to worship idols that couldn’t even speak. 3So I want you to know that anyone who’s speaking with the help of God’s Spirit never says, “May Jesus be cursed.” And without the help of the Holy Spirit, no one can say, “Jesus is Lord.”
4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5There are different ways to serve, but they all come from the same Lord. 6There are different ways the Spirit works, but the same God is working in all these ways and in every person.
7The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way for the good of all. 8To one person, the Spirit gives a message of wisdom. To another, the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. 9To another the same Spirit gives faith, and to another gifts of healing. 10To another he gives the power to do miracles, or to prophesy, or to tell spirits apart, or to speak in different kinds of languages they hadn’t known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages. 11All these gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides.
One Body but Many Parts
12The body has many parts, but all of its many parts make up that one body. It’s the same with Christ. 13We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. It didn’t matter whether we were Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free people. We were all given the same Spirit to drink. 14So the body is not made up of just one part. It has many parts.
15If the foot said, “I’m not a hand, so I don’t belong to the body,” that wouldn’t make it not part of the body anymore. 16And if the ear said, “I’m not an eye, so I don’t belong to the body,” that wouldn’t make it not part of the body anymore. 17If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how could it smell? 18God has placed each part in the body just as he wanted it to be. 19If all the parts were the same, how could there be a body? 20As it is, there are many parts, but there’s only one body.
21The eye can’t say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22It’s just the opposite! The parts of the body that seem to be weaker are the ones we can’t do without. 23Any parts that we think are less attractive, we take special care to dress up. Some parts are private, and we treat them with modesty, 24which the other parts don’t need. When God put the body together, he gave more honor to the parts that didn’t have any. 25He did that so the parts of the body wouldn’t divide into opposing groups. Instead, they would all take care of one another. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy.
27You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, guiding, and speaking in different kinds of languages. 29Is everyone an apostle? Is everyone a prophet? Is everyone a teacher? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages they hadn’t known before? Do all explain what is said in those languages? 31Above all, you should want the greater gifts, but now let me show you the best way of all.
