Joseph Reveals Who He Is
1Joseph could not control himself in front of his servants any longer, so he cried out, āHave everyone leave me.ā When only the brothers were left with Joseph, he told them who he was. 2Joseph cried so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and the people in the kingās palace heard about it. 3He said to his brothers, āI am Joseph. Is my father still alive?ā But the brothers could not answer him, because they were very afraid of him.
4So Joseph said to them, āCome close to me.ā When the brothers came close to him, he said to them, āI am your brother Joseph, whom you sold as a slave to go to Egypt. 5Now donāt be worried or angry with yourselves because you sold me here. God sent me here ahead of you to save peopleās lives. 6No food has grown on the land for two years now, and there will be five more years without planting or harvest. 7So God sent me here ahead of you to make sure you have some descendants left on earth and to keep you alive in an amazing way. 8So it was not you who sent me here, but God. God has made me the highest officer of the king of Egypt. I am in charge of his palace, and I am the master of all the land of Egypt.
9āSo leave quickly and go to my father. Tell him, āYour son Joseph says: God has made me master over all Egypt. Come down to me quickly. 10Live in the land of Goshen where you will be near me. Your children, your grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all that you have will also be near me. 11I will care for you during the next five years of hunger so that you and your family and all that you have will not starve.ā
12āNow you can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that the one speaking to you is really Joseph. 13So tell my father about how powerful I have become in Egypt. Tell him about everything you have seen. Now hurry and bring him back to me.ā 14Then Joseph hugged his brother Benjamin and cried, and Benjamin cried also. 15And Joseph kissed all his brothers and cried as he hugged them. After this, his brothers talked with him.
16When the king of Egypt and his officers learned that Josephās brothers had come, they were very happy. 17So the king said to Joseph, āTell your brothers to load their animals and go back to the land of Canaan 18and bring their father and their families back here to me. I will give them the best land in Egypt, and they will eat the best food we have here. 19Tell them to take some wagons from Egypt for their children and their wives and to bring their father back also. 20Tell them not to worry about bringing any of their things with them, because we will give them the best of what we have in Egypt.ā
21So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them wagons as the king had ordered and food for their trip. 22He gave each brother a change of clothes, but he gave Benjamin five changes of clothes and about seven and one-half pounds of silver. 23Joseph also sent his father ten donkeys loaded with the best things from Egypt and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and other food for his father on his trip back. 24Then Joseph told his brothers to go. As they were leaving, he said to them, āDonāt quarrel on the way home.ā
25So the brothers left Egypt and went to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. 26They told him, āJoseph is still alive and is the ruler over all the land of Egypt.ā Their father was shocked and did not believe them. 27But when the brothers told him everything Joseph had said, and when Jacob saw the wagons Joseph had sent to carry him back to Egypt, he felt better. 28Israel said, āNow I believe you. My son Joseph is still alive, and I will go and see him before I die.ā

Joseph Tells His Brothers Who He Is
1Joseph couldnāt control himself anymore in front of all his attendants. He cried out, āHave everyone leave me!ā So there wasnāt anyone with Joseph when he told his brothers who he was. 2He wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him. Everyone in Pharaohās house heard about it.
3Joseph said to his brothers, āI am Joseph! Is my father still alive?ā But his brothers werenāt able to answer him. They were too afraid of him.
4Joseph said to his brothers, āCome close to me.ā So they did. Then he said, āI am your brother Joseph. Iām the one you sold into Egypt. 5But donāt be upset. And donāt be angry with yourselves because you sold me here. God sent me ahead of you to save many lives. 6For two years now, there hasnāt been enough food in the land. And for the next five years, people wonāt be plowing or gathering crops. 7But God sent me ahead of you to keep some of you alive on earth. He sent me here to save your lives by an act of mighty power.
8āSo then, it wasnāt you who sent me here. It was God. He made me like a father to Pharaoh. He made me master of Pharaohās entire house. God made me ruler of the whole land of Egypt. 9Now hurry back to my father. Say to him, āYour son Joseph says, āGod has made me master of the whole land of Egypt. Come down to me. Donāt waste any time. 10You will live in the area of Goshen. You, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and everything you have will be near me. 11There I will provide everything you need. There are still five years to come when there wonāt be enough food. If you donāt come down here, you and your family and everyone who belongs to you will lose everything.āāā
12āMy brothers, I am Joseph. You can see for yourselves that I am the one speaking to you. My brother Benjamin can see it too. 13Tell my father about all the honor given to me in Egypt. Tell him about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.ā
14Then Joseph threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept. Benjamin also hugged him and wept. 15Joseph kissed all his brothers and wept over them. After that, his brothers talked with him.
16The news reached Pharaohās palace that Josephās brothers had come. Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. 17Pharaoh said to Joseph, āHereās what I want you to tell your brothers. Say to them, āLoad your animals. Return to the land of Canaan. 18Bring your father and your families back to me. Iāll give you the best land in Egypt. You can enjoy all the good things in the land.ā
19āAnd hereās something else I want you to tell them. Say to them, āTake some carts from Egypt. Your children and your wives can use them. Get your father and come back. 20Donāt worry about the things you have back there. The best of everything in Egypt will belong to you.āāā
21Then the sons of Israel did so. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded. He also gave them supplies for their journey. 22He gave new clothes to each of them. But he gave Benjamin more than seven pounds of silver. He also gave him five sets of clothes. 23He sent his father ten male donkeys loaded with the best things from Egypt. He also sent ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other supplies for his journey. 24Then Joseph sent his brothers away. As they were leaving he said to them, āDonāt argue on the way!ā
25So they went up out of Egypt. They came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. 26They told him, āJoseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of the whole land of Egypt.ā Jacob was shocked. He didnāt believe them. 27So they told him everything Joseph had said to them. Jacob saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back. That gave new life to their father Jacob. 28Israel said, āI believe it now! My son Joseph is still alive. Iāll go and see him before I die.ā
