Genesis 50

The Death of Israel
1Then Joseph fell on his fatherās face, and wept over him and kissed him. 2Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.
4When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, āIf now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying, 5āMy father made me swear, saying, āBehold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.ā Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.āāā 6Pharaoh said, āGo up and bury your father, as he made you swear.ā
7So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his fatherās household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. 10When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed seven days mourning for his father. 11Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, āThis is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.ā Therefore it was named Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
Burial at Machpelah
12Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; 13for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
15When Josephās brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, āWhat if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!ā 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, āYour father charged before he died, saying, 17āThus you shall say to Joseph, āPlease forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.āāā And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.ā And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, āBehold, we are your servants.ā 19But Joseph said to them, āDo not be afraid, for am I in Godās place? 20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. 21So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.ā So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Death of Joseph
22Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his fatherās household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraimās sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Josephās knees. 24Joseph said to his brothers, āI am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.ā 25Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, āGod will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.ā 26So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

B'resheet (Gen) 50
50
1Yosef fell on his fatherās face, wept over him and kissed him. 2Then Yosef ordered the physicians in his service to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israāel. 3Forty days were spent at this, the normal amount of time for embalming. Then the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
4When the period of mourning was over, Yosef addressed to the household of Pharaoh: āI would like to ask a favor. Tell Pharaoh, 5āMy father had me swear an oath. He said, āI am going to die. You are to bury me in my grave, which I dug for myself in the land of Kenaāan.ā Therefore, I beg you, let me go up and bury my father; I will return.āā 6Pharaoh responded, āGo up and bury your father, as he made you swear.ā
7So Yosef went up to bury his father. With him went all Pharaohās servants, the leaders of his household and the leaders of the land of Egypt, 8along with the entire household of Yosef, his brothers and his fatherās household; only their little ones, their flocks and their cattle did they leave in the land of Goshen. 9Moreover, there went up with him both chariots and horsemen ā it was a very large caravan.
10When they arrived at the threshing-floor in Atad, beyond the Yarden, they raised a loud and bitter lamentation, mourning for his father seven days. 11When the local inhabitants, the Kenaāani, saw the mourning on the floor of Atad they said, āHow bitterly the Egyptians are mourning!ā This is why the place was given the name Avel-Mitzrayim [mourning of Egypt], there beyond the Yarden.
12His sons did to him as he had ordered them to do ā 13they carried him into the land of Kenaāan and buried him in the cave in the field of Makhpelah, which Avraham had bought, along with the field, as a burial-place belonging to him, from āEfron the Hitti, by Mamre.
14Then, after burying his father, Yosef returned to Egypt, he, his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
15Realizing that their father was dead, Yosefās brothers said, āYosef may hate us now and pay us back in full for all the suffering we caused him.ā 16So they sent a message to Yosef which said, āYour father gave this order before he died: 17āSay to Yosef, āI beg you now, please forgive your brothersā crime and wickedness in doing you harm.āā So now, we beg of you, forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.ā Yosef wept when they spoke to him; 18and his brothers too came, prostrated themselves before him and said, āHere, we are your slaves.ā 19But Yosef said to them, āDonāt be afraid! Am I in the place of God? 20You meant to do me harm, but God meant it for good ā so that it would come about as it is today, with many peopleās lives being saved. (vii) 21So donāt be afraid ā I will provide for you and your little ones.ā In this way he comforted them, speaking kindly to them.
22Yosef continued living in Egypt, he and his fatherās household. Yosef lived 110 years. (Maftir) 23Yosef lived to see Efrayimās great-grandchildren, and the children of Mānashehās son Makhir were born on Yosefās knees.
24Yosef said to his brothers, āI am dying. But God will surely remember you and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Avraham, Yitzāchak and Yaāakov.ā 25Then Yosef took an oath from the sons of Israāel: āGod will surely remember you, and you are to carry my bones up from here.ā 26So Yosef died at the age of 110, and they embalmed him and put him in a coffin in Egypt.
